Watershed Conservation Resources

The Connecticut Rivers Community Wiki is a collaborative resource for valuable information on every one of Connecticut's 100+ rivers. Most importantly, all of the information is entered by caring individuals like you. It is monitored by the Southern Connecticut State University Science Education and Environmental Studies Department.
The Connecticut Watershed Conservation Network is is a project of Rivers Alliance of Connecticut that brings together members of river and watershed groups, land trusts, conservation commissions, and government agencies to identify ways we can improve our communication, share our organizational resources, and better coordinate our watershed protection efforts statewide.
The Department of Environmental Protection's mission is to conserve, improve and protect the natural resources and environment of the State of Connecticut.
The Environmental Protection Agency's mission is to protect human health and to safeguard the natural environment — air, water, and land — upon which life depends. Its Adopt Your Watershed program encourages the stewardship of the nation's water resources.
The Fish & Wildlife Service 's mission is, working with people, to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

The Geological Survey serves the nation by providing reliable scientific information to describe and understand the earth; minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy and mineral resources; and enhance and protect our quality of life.

The Northeast Information Node (NIN) of the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) facilitates sharing biological information from across of region. NIN's web site gives users easy access to the data resources and analysis tools they need to better understand, utilize, and protect the environmental resources of this region.

The NBII's National River Restoration Science Synthesis (NRRSS) project is a national effort to amalgamate local and regional restoration databases and projects and to analyze the extent, nature, scientific basis and success of stream river restoration projects.

Know Your Watershed is a coordinated national effort to encourage the formation of local, voluntary watershed partnerships and help assure that these partnerships successfully attain their goals.
The National Park Service's Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program is a community resource. Rivers & Trails staff work with community groups and local and State governments to conserve rivers, preserve open space, and develop trails and greenways.
Natural Resources Conservation Service soil conservationists, soil scientists, agronomists, ecologists, engineers, planners, and other specialists promote land stewardship by providing technical assistance through teams to address surface and groundwater quality; wetlands, riparian areas, and biodiversity; aquatic and terrestrial habitat; and impacts of land use changes.

Connecticut's Southwestern Conservation District is a local semi-governmental non-profit organization that serves municipalities and residents by providing technical services and education.
Stream Ecology is an educational and user-friendly introduction to the subject provided by the Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum, a nonprofit, educational organization dedicated to: preserving America's flyfishing heritage; teaching its future generations of flyfishers; and protecting its flyfishing environment.

The University of Connecticut offers two programs to inform, educate and assist land use decision makers:

  • CLEAR (Center for Land use Education And Research) conducts remote sensing research, develops landscape analysis tools and training, and conducts outreach education programs.
  • NEMO (Non-point pollution Education for Municipal Officials) is a national educational program that addresses the relationship of land use to natural resource protection.

Some Local Conservation Organizations

The Redding Landtrust was founded in 1965 in order to preserve Redding's natural heritage of open space, the Redding Land Trust today holds, in outright gifts or in conservation easements, some 1,600 acres of meadows and woodlands, saved forever from the bulldozer.
The Aspetuck Land Trust is devoted to preserving open space and the natural resources of Easton, Fairfield, Weston and Westport for the benefit of the public. It has preserved over 1,700 acres of land, which will be maintained in a natural state in perpetuity.
Clean Water Action plays a lead role in the New England Zero Mercury Campaign. It is currently active in combating global warming, promoting clean energy sources and replacing toxic chemicals with safer alternatives.
The Connecticut Association of Conservation and Inland Wetlands Commissions, Inc. (CACIWC, Inc.) was established in 1974 to provide education and information to the volunteers and staff that carry out the responsibilities of Connecticut’s municipal Conservation and Inland Wetlands Commissions.
The Connecticut Fund for the Environment (now incorporating Save the Sound) uses law, science and education to better air and water quality, control toxic contamination, minimize the adverse impacts of highways and traffic congestion, protect public water supplies and preserve open space and wetlands that are so crucial to both the state’s citizens and its wildlife.
The Connecticut League of Conservation Voters is a bi-partisan, statewide, non-profit organization dedicated to protecting Connecticut's environment by making it a priority for our elected leaders.
Earthplace educates the community about nature and the environment and about ways of taking action to preserve, protect and enjoy nature and the environment. It seeks volunteers to help run the award-winning Harbor Watch / River Watch, a water quality monitoring effort that is actively engaged in the scientific monitoring of local estuaries and watersheds in lower Fairfield County.
EHHI is dedicated to protecting human health from environmental harms through research, education and promotion of sound public policy.
The Fairfield based Mill River Wetland Committee, Inc. is an award winning non-profit organization founded in 1967 to strengthen environmental education through the study of river basin systems.
Rivers Alliance of Connecticut seeks to protect Connecticut's rivers, streams, and watersheds by building coalitions and encouraging collaboration, strengthening the grassroots, promoting sound public policy and educating the public.

The Nature Conservancy preserves the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.
The Shelton Land Conservation Trust's purpose is the preservation and protection of natural resources in Shelton and the acceptance or purchase of land and its maintenance for the public benefit.
The Trumbull Land Trust's mission is threefold: 1) Promote, for the benefit of the general public, the preservation of natural resources, principally in but not limited to the town of Trumbull; 2) Acquire lands to preserve said lands as natural open spaces and open said lands to the general public; 3) Engage in and promote the study of and education regarding natural resources.

American Littoral Society Since 1961, it has empowered people to care for the coast through advocating, learning, and conserving. Its heads the largest volunteer, saltwater fish tagging program in the U.S.
American Rivers
Since 1973, it has been dedicated to protecting and restoring healthy, natural rivers and the variety of life they sustain for people, fish and wildlife.

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers BH&A is concerned that peace, quiet and freedom may be lost to the pressures of human population, industry and technology. It believes in keeping public lands healthy and accessible, in managing wildlife as a public trust and all native wildlife as a priceless resource, and in protecting the big, natural areas and natural functions that support our hunting and fishing heritage.
Campaign for America's Wilderness Singularly focused on achieving lasting protection for threatened wild lands, proactively working to preserve some of our last, best wild places for those who will come after us.
Center for Biological Diversity It protects endangered species and wild places through science, policy, education, and environmental law.
Clean Water Network An alliance of more than 1,000 public interest organizations around the country working together to strengthen and implement federal clean water and wetlands policy.
Coastal Conservation Association Its objective is to conserve, promote and enhance the present and future availability of coastal resources for the benefit and enjoyment of the general public. Active in the Gulf, the southeastern states and MD, NY, NH, ME. No chapter in CT.
Columbia & Snake Rivers Campaign A project of the Save Our Wild Salmon Coalition (to which TU belongs,) it is committed to recovering Pacific Northwest wild salmon and the healthy rivers and habitat upon which they depend, including the removal of the 4 Lower Snake River dams.
Connecticut Federation of Lakes Promoting the understanding and comprehensive management of lakes, ponds and watershed associations.
Connecticut River Watershed Council The primary broad-based citizen advocate for the environmental well-being of the entire Connecticut River; they promote improvement of water quality and the restoration, conservation, and sustainable use of its natural resources.
Conservation Fisheries, Inc.
It is dedicated to the preservation of aquatic biodiversity and habitats in the southeastern United States (one of the world's biological hot spots) by saving rare freshwater fish via captive propagation and low-impact monitoring.
Conservation Law Foundation
It works to solve the most significant environmental problems that threaten New England. CLF’s advocates use law, economics and science to create innovative strategies to conserve natural resources, protect public health and promote vital communities in our region.
Defenders of Wildlife It is dedicated to the protection of all native wild animals and plants in their natural communities.
Ecotrust Its mission is to build Salmon Nation, a place where people and wild salmon thrive, from Alaska to California.
Endangered Species Coalition As the guardian of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA), the Coalition speaks on endangered species issues for some 380 environmental, conservation, religious, scientific, humane, sporting and business groups (TU included.) It works to ensure that the Act itself, as well as the species it protects, can be passed on safely into the future.

Natural Resources Defense Council NRDC uses law, science and the support of more than 1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things.
New Hampshire Rivers Council It works to educate the public about the value of the state's rivers, designates rivers in the state's protection program, and advocates for strong public policies and wise management of New Hampshire's river resources.
New York Rivers United A statewide river conservation organization created in 1992 by a coalition of river groups to address the environmental and recreational consequences of the relicensing of more than 50 hydropower projects on various rivers in NY.
North American Native Fishes Association NANFA is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt corporation dedicated to the appreciation, study and conservation of the continent's native fishes.
North Atlantic Salmon Fund Their solution to the wild salmon's problems is very simple: pay commercial fishermen not to fish for wild salmon: Atlantic salmon is now protected throughout most of its feeding grounds. In 2005 most countries on both sides of the Atlantic had their best salmon runs for 20 or 30 years!

Theodore Gordon Flyfishers A New York conservation and fly fishing group whose dual mission is to preserve and enhance the coldwater fisheries that sustain our sport as well as to promote and nourish the rewards of fellowship derived from a unique company of friends.
Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership A coalition seeking to ensure that America’s public and private lands will always provide clean water, healthy habitat, bountiful fish and wildlife populations, and ample opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. TU is an integral part.
Trust for Public Land The only national nonprofit working exclusively to protect land for human enjoyment and well-being.
Union of Concerned Scientists An independent nonprofit alliance of concerned citizens and scientists, they augment rigorous scientific analysis with innovative thinking and committed citizen advocacy to build a cleaner, healthier environment and a safer world.
Water Conserve A water conservation portal and internet search tool that provides access to reviewed water conservation news and information.
Waterkeeper's Alliance A grassroots organization with over 100 local water programs. It is dedicated to preserving and protecting your water from polluters.
Western Native Trout Campaign The Campaign is committed to restoring healthy native trout populations by uniting biodiversity, wilderness, and fishing advocates in an action-oriented effort to comprehensively protect native western trout and their habitats. TU is a vital part.
Whirling Disease Foundation Its mission is to raise the funds needed for researched solutions to the damage caused by whirling disease, the leading threat to wild trout populations. Now incorporated into TU.
Wilderness Society Its mission is to deliver to future generations an unspoiled legacy of wild places, with all the precious values they hold: Biological diversity; clean air and water; towering forests, rushing rivers, and sage-sweet, silent deserts.
Wildlands Project The organization provides a conservation strategy that is continental, regional and local in scale The Project works to connect parks and protected areas from Canada to Mexico, from the Pacific to the Atlantic.
Wild Salmon Center Its mission is to identify, understand and protect the best wild salmon ecosystems of the Pacific Rim.
Wild Steelhead Coalition An organization dedicated to increasing the return of wild steelhead to the waters and rivers of the Pacific Northwest.
World Trout An on-going conservation effort to preserve native trout species worldwide, it was founded by artist and naturalist James Prosek and Yvon Chouinard, avid fly fisherman, climber, and founder of Patagonia, Inc., the outdoor apparel company. World Wildlife Fund Working in more than 100 countries around the globe to conserve the diversity of life on earth, it leads international efforts to protect endangered species and their habitats.
